Two years ago, I was attempting to escape the predictable Halloween madness. I decided that an Indian restaurant on Columbus Avenue might serve as a respite.
No such luck. Costumed kids paraded in and out repeatedly. The staff was aware of this peculiar American custom and had equipped itself with a large bowl of candy.
I asked my waiter, jokingly, if this holiday was celebrated in India. I didn’t anticipate his answer.
“We have something like it, but the children have to sing a song to get a treat. Here they do nothing and still expect a reward.”
